14 But the gate is narrow (contracted by pressure) and the way is straitened and compressed that leads away to life, and few are those who find it.

Matthew 7:14 AMPC

Few find Eternal Life

These are some tough words from Jesus hearing Him say that only FEW find eternal life. Jesus says in Luke 13, that many will not be able to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

23 And someone asked Him, Lord, will only a few be saved (rescued, delivered from the penalties of the last judgment, and made partakers of the salvation by Christ)? And He said to them,

24 Strive to enter by the narrow door [force yourselves through it], for many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.

Luke 13:23-24 AMPC

  • Why does Jesus say only few find eternal life?

Many people who believe in Jesus do not want to DENY themselves and obey what He teaches. He lets us know that not everyone who calls Him Lord, will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. We know unbelievers do not call Jesus Lord. Jesus is talking to Christians.

21 Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father Who is in heaven.

22 Many will say to Me on that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name and driven out demons in Your name and done many mighty works in Your name?

23 And then I will say to them openly (publicly), I never knew you; depart from Me, you who act wickedly [disregarding My commands].

Matthew 7:21-23 AMPC

These people abuse the grace of God and do not obey what Jesus says. Jesus is very clear that we must remain faithful to Him and His word. If we are not faithful, He will cast us away with the unbelievers.

42 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful steward, the wise man whom his master will set over those in his household service to supply them their allowance of food at the appointed time?

43 Blessed (happy and to be envied) is that servant whom his master finds so doing when he arrives.

44 Truly I tell you, he will set him in charge over all his possessions.

45 But if that servant says in his heart, My master is late in coming, and begins to strike the menservants and the maids and to eat and drink and get drunk,

46 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour of which he does not know, and will punish him and cut him off and assign his lot with the unfaithful.

Luke 12:42-46 AMPC

46 The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looketh not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

Luke 12:46 KJV

  • The portion of unbelievers is the lake of fire.

8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Revelation 21:8 KJV
