"15 And He said to them, Guard yourselves and keep free from all covetousness (the immoderate desire for wealth, the greedy longing to have more); for a man’s life does not consist in and is not derived from possessing overflowing abundance or that which is over and above his needs.

Be on Guard against greed

We must be careful to not fall into the trap of greed or jealousy. To be covetous is to have great desire to possess what someone else has. In sports, many athletes struggle or submit to jealousy. I know there was a time in my life in college where I felt jealous of other athletes. It happens because you may see others get treated better than you or they may have better stats than you. This feeling that I submitted to was wrong. We should not be jealous of each other at all. We should in fact lift and build each other up. Also, being jealous can hinder your focus on what God has for you. If you are more concerned about what someone else is doing and not fully committed to what you are supposed to be doing, you can miss your opportunity.
When I started reading the Bible more my heart started to change and I no longer submitted to being jealous of other athletes. Yes, I still get tempted with the feeling to be jealous but I choose not to submit to it. While we are in the flesh we will be tempted. No one is exempt from temptation. Jesus, our Lord, was tempted in every way just like us (Hebrews 4:15). We must resist those temptations and put the flesh down. I know I have talked about my senior year a lot at Florida State but that was a big year for me. A lot of it had to do with the heart change that I had. The Lord honored me when I just focused on Him and my desire was to please Him. The Lord elevated me when I was happy to see others do well and succeed. God desires that we walk in love to our neighbor and NOT be jealous of them.
Continue to resist the flesh and walk in the Spirit and bear good fruit. Let us live moderately and not be greedy. Let us live off of what we need and bless those who are in need too!
