19 "Honor your father and your mother..."

Matthew 19:19 AMPC

Honor your dad & mom

In the Old Testament, honoring your dad and your mom was originally one of the 10 commandments. Jesus is confirming that He has not come to do away with the Law of God, which is the 10 commandments, but that we should continue to practice it.

To show honor to someone is to show high respect, or great esteem. We are to honor, which is, respect our parents. I have mentioned before that I have a difficult relationship with my dad. There is division between us because I choose to follow Jesus and he currently doesn't. I still show respect for my dad even after the many years of disagreements between us. When my dad needed food or a place to stay I would send him money to help him out whenever I had it. Regardless, of how bad our conversations went, I would still love him and respect him.

When Jesus was young, He was in the temple asking questions and talking about the Word. His parents, Mary and Joseph were looking for Him. When they found him they were upset because they thought they had lost him. Jesus said, "Do you not know that I must be about my Father's business?" They didn't understand, so Jesus respecting a command given by His Father, submitted to them and was in obedience. If our Lord was obedient to this command, then we need to submit as well.

46 After three days they found Him [came upon Him] in the [court of the] temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.

47 And all who heard Him were astonished and overwhelmed with bewildered wonder at His intelligence and understanding and His replies.

48 And when they [Joseph and Mary] saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, Child, why have You treated us like this? Here Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You [distressed and tormented].

49 And He said to them, How is it that you had to look for Me? Did you not see and know that it is necessary [as a duty] for Me to be in My Father’s house and [occupied] about My Father’s business?

50 But they did not comprehend what He was saying to them.

51 And He went down with them and came to Nazareth and was [habitually] obedient to them; and his mother kept and closely and persistently guarded all these things in her heart.

52 And Jesus increased in wisdom (in broad and full understanding) and in stature and years, and in favor with God and man.
