Daily Play Call #105

8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.

11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

Matthew 23:8-11 KJV

Call No Man Rabbi or Master

Jesus was speaking to the multitude and His disciples about the Pharisees and scribes. He was talking about their HYPOCRISY. Jesus addressed how they loved to be seen by other people when they do their works. They love to be called Rabbi and sit in the chief seats in the synagogue and uppermost rooms at feasts. So in order to prevent pride and self exaltation Jesus gives a command to His disciples and the multitude.

He says to call no man Rabbi for one is your Master and that is Jesus Christ. We should not call anyone Rabbi because Jesus Christ is our Master. He also goes on to say to call no man on earth your Father, for ONE is your Father who is in HEAVEN. When I first saw this command I began to only call my parent, DAD instead of Father. In Heaven, my dad would be my brother as we all have One Father God. When I say Father I am speaking on our Father in Heaven. We as Christians should all submit to the words of Jesus. He says these commands for a reason.

Jesus lastly goes on to say to call no man Master. The only one who I will call Master is Jesus Christ. I will not call any man Master on earth. Jesus gives us the reason why we should do this in verse 8. He says, "All of you are brothers." These commands of Jesus aren't to be ignored or preached away saying He was only talking about the pharisees. Jesus meant what He said. We have ONE Master, ONE Father, and ONE Rabbi. We are all brothers who follow Jesus Christ the Son of God.

  • The Greatest amongst us must be a servant!

  • I believe this command can be considered one of the least commands. Jesus says what happens to those who break the least and teach others so.

“Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭19‬ ‭KJV‬‬
